Continent, bezeichnet das feste Land, den Inseln entgegengesetzt. In Europa gebraucht man das Wort vorzüglich im Gegensatze zu Großbritannien und Irland, ebenso bei Amerika und Asien, im Gegensatze zu den diese Welttheile zahlreich umgebenden Inselgruppen.
