Diction, Stil, Sprache, Schreibart. Der Ausdruck wird meist von rhythmischen Dichtungen gebraucht und es heißt z. B.: In diesem Trauerspiele ist eine schöne, glänzende, oder eine schwülstige, unbeholfene Diction. – Bei der großen Ausbildung, welche unsere Sprache seither erlangt, ist eine schöne Diction kein wesentliches Verdienst mehr, sondern ein unerläßliches Erforderniß. In früherer Zeit, wo die deutsche Poesie noch in der Wiege lag, konnte eine schöne Diction einem Werke den Namen »Meisterwerk« erwerben und für den Mangel an Erfindung, Idee, geniale Auffassung und Charakteristik entschädigen. Mit dem Erscheinen unserer großen Dichter und deren Vollendung in der Diction sind freilich die Ansprüche in eben demselben Verhältnisse gestiegen, und der heißt nicht mehr ein Dichter, der bloß einer schönen Diction, des glänzenden Ausdruckes gewöhnlicher Gedanken, mächtig ist.
