Chamouni

Chamouni. Ein sehr berühmtes Thal am nördlichen Abhange des Montblanc im Königreiche Sardinien, Provinz Savoyen. Es ist 5 Stunden lang, ½ bis ½ Stunde breit, von 4000 Bewohnern cultivirt, welche alle Getreide und Gemüsesorten bauen, obgleich es 3200 Pariser Fuß über der Meeresfläche, und rings von ewigem Eise umstarrt liegt. Der riesige Montblanc (s. d.) und sechs Gletscher belagern dasselbe, das sogenannte mer de glace ist darunter der breiteste. Dennoch ist es während des Sommers höchst romantisch, und wird von so vielen Fremden besucht, daß es sich aus einer Wüste, welche vielleicht noch Niemand betreten hatte, seit 1711 zu einem Grade von Wohlstand erhob, welcher in Erstaunen setzt.
