Congress

Congress, vom lateinischen Worte congredi, zusammentreten, nennt man eine Versammlung von Fürsten oder deren Gesandten zur Besprechung eines gemeinschaftlichen Interesse. Erst seit den letzten 20 Jahren ist diese Benennung allgemeiner geworden. Der Wiener Congreß 1814, 1815 hatte die Stiftung des deutschen Bundes, der Aachener 1818 die Räumung Frankreichs von den verbündeten Heeren zum Zwecke. Der nächste zu Karlsbad beschäftigte sich mit Maßregeln gegen mögliche Aufstände, der zweite zu Wien 1819 mit der Auslegung der Bundesakte. Die folgenden Congresse zu Troppau, Laibach und Verona 1821 und 1822 bezogen sich auf die italienischen Angelegenheiten. – Mit demselben Namen bezeichnet man auch die Versammlung der Abgeordneten der nordamerikanischen Freistaaten unter einem Präsidenten, die zu Columbia Statt findet und die höchste Gewalt der Union ausübt.
