John Bull

John Bull, in der Wortbedeutung Hans Ochs, womit scherzhafter Weise der englische Volkscharakter personifizirt wird. Auf Carikaturen erscheint er als ein robuster Kerl, der stets zum Boxen aufgelegt ist. Der irish Bull ist eine widersinnige Rede, wie man sie den Irländern zur Last legt. Er beruht nicht, wie der Calemburg, auf einer Wort- und Ausspracheverwechslung, sondern auf einer logischen Widersinnigkeit, auf einer Sinnverwechslung. So sagte z. B. ein Irländer: »Von allen Fischen ist der Aal derjenige, welcher nach seinem Tode am längsten lebt,« statt, welcher ein sehr zähes Leben hat, oder in einzelne Stücke zerschnitten, noch zu leben scheint.
