Mantua

Mantua, in frühern Zeiten ein Herzogthum, dem Hause Gonzaga gehörend, dessen letzter Sprosse, Karl IV., wegen seiner Anhänglichkeit an die französische Partei 1703 vom Kaiser in die Acht erklärt und seines Landes beraubt wurde, worauf er ohne Erben in Padua starb. Später gehörte es zum Königreich Italien und kam 1814 wieder an Oestreich. Die sehr feste Stadt liegt in einem vom Mincio gebildeten See, über welchen zwei Dämme führen, hat breite, schöne Straßen und viele Kirchen und Paläste, von welchen der Palazzo della Giustezza, Gonzaga und der in T Form gebaute Palast Pitti sich auszeichnen. Gemälde und andere Kunstwerke, besonders von dem daselbst verstorbenen Giulio Romano (der Krieg der Götter und Riesen) zieren auch diese Stadt, wie andere Orte Italiens in künstlerischer Hinsicht. Einen bezaubernden Anblick gewähren die Alpen, zur Abendzeit von der Brücke St. Georgio. Die Einwohnerzahl beträgt 29,000.
