Satan. Der bekannte biblische Name des Teufels, wenn derselbe als Verführer und Versucher geschildert wird; so erscheint er im Buche Hiob, den frommen Mann mit harter Prüfung heimzusuchen, so gibt er zum Schaden Israels dem David ein, das Volk zählen zu lassen; so trat er zu Jesus in die Wüste und führte ihn auf die Zinne des Tempels, so fuhr er in Judas Ischarioth, und trieb ihn zum Verrath. »Er verstellet sich,« sagt die heilige Schrift: »zum Engel des Lichts.« S. ist der Ahriman der jüdischchristlichen Mythe, der von Gott, dem Princip des Lichts, abgefallene Fürst der Finsterniß, das Princip des Bösen, Schlechten, Verderblichen, dessen Macht aber durch die Incarnation des Weltherrschers in Jesu abermals gebrochen und besiegt ward. Die Bibel selbst bezeichnet ihn als die große Weltschlange, welche durch das Werk der Erlösung in tausendjährige Fesseln geschlagen ward.
