Opitz, Martin

Opitz, Martin, der Vater der deutschen Dichtersprache und Stifter der schlesischen Dichterschule, geb. am 23. December 1597 zu Bunzlau und gest. als polnischer Historiograph am 20. August 1639 zu Danzig, obwohl kein genialer, doch ein zarter, edler Dichter, erlangte in der für Deutschland so traurigen Periode des 30 jährigen Kriegs einen Ruf, wie ihn kein Dichter früher oder später besessen. Kaiser Ferdinand II. reichte ihm mit eigener Hand den Lorbeerkranz, 1628 wurde ihm gar die damals seltene Auszeichnung in den Adelstand erhoben zu werden; er nannte sich nun Opitz von Boberfeld. Unbestritten sind seine Verdienste um die Reinheit der deutschen Sprache, und Niemand hat früher ihren natürlichen Rhythmus so klar erkannt. Leider huldigte er selbst zu sehr dem damaligen franz.- holländischen Geschmack, nachdem eine sentenzenreiche Prosa in Alexandrinern für wahre Poesie galt. Eine kritische Auswahl seiner Gedichte enthält W. Müller's Bibliothek deutscher Dichter des XVII. Jahrh., I. Band, Leipzig 1822.
