Papyrus

Papyrus oder Papierpflanze, wächst in sumpfigen Gegenden der heißen Länder, besonders in Aegyptens Nilniederungen. Der ganze Pflanzenstengel besteht aus mehreren über einander gerollten Häuten, deren innerste die Alten zu dem bekannten Papier benutzten. Zu dem Behufe lösten sie diese in seinen Schichten ab, breiteten letztere auf einer angefeuchteten Tafel aus, und überstrichen diese mit warmem klebrigem Nilwasser. Auf die erste Lage kam eine zweite, darauf wurden sie zusammengepreßt, an der Luft getrocknet und geglättet. Die einzigen Papyrusrollen (d. h. beschriebenes und nachher gerolltes Papyruspapier) aus den Zeiten her Römer und Griechen hat man in Herkulanum zu Tage gefördert , doch ist die unendliche, auf ihre Entzifferung bisher verwandte, Mühe noch durch keine reiche Ausbeute belohnt worden.
