Boccaccio, Giovanni

Boccaccio, Giovanni, Giovanni, ein liebenswürdiger Dichter und der beste Prosaist Italiens, wurde als der Sohn eines italienischen Kaufmannes 1313 zu Paris geboren, zeitig nach Florenz gebracht, wo er sich dem Handel widmen sollte, sich aber in Neapel an die Gelehrten anschloß, Petrarka's Freundschaft gewann, und nach seines Vaters Tode ganz den Wissenschaften in die Arme warf. Eine Beschützerin fand er in Maria, der natürlichen Tochter König Robert's von Neapel, die er liebte und deren Gegenliebe er erwarb. Er feierte sie unter dem Namen Fiametta in seinen Dichtungen. Boccaccio starb zu Florenz 1375 als Professor. Sein schönstes Werk, voll Naivetät, Fantasie und Eleganz ist der Decameron, 100 Erzählungen, zum Theil von seiner eigenen Erfindung, zum Theil provençalischen Dichtern nachgebildet. Viele davon eignen sich wegen des darin herrschenden frivolen Tones weniger zur Damenlectüre. Soltau hat sie in's Deutsche übersetzt. Noch schrieb er eine große Anzahl Romane und Gedichte, darunter ist noch bemerkenswerth: l'amorosa Fiametta, von Sophia Brentano in's Deutsche übertragen.
