Quinault, Philippe. Das Zeitalter Ludwig's XIV., so fruchtbar an Talenten, um die glanzvolle Regierung dieses Fürsten mit allen Attributen der Kunst, Wissenschaft und Poesie zu umgeben, zählte auch den Operndichter Quinault unter seinen Koryphäen. Die hinterlassenen Opern dieses Dichters, welche 1778 zu Paris in 5 Bänden erschienen, und von denen wir nur seine »Armide« und »Atys« erwähnen wollen, enthalten unstreitig in der lyrischmusikalischen Poesie so viele Schönheiten, und namentlich seine Canzonen und Arien dürften selbst in neuerer Zeit so selten übertroffen worden sein, daß Quinault heute noch zu den größten Operndichtern in Frankreich gezählt wird. Q. war der Sohn einer Schauspielerin, wurde 1635 geb. und starb 1688.
